As a family dentist in Van Nuys, CA we are often asked about when a tooth extraction is necessary. It is understandable that this question comes up so much, after all, no one wants to have a tooth pulled unless it is absolutely beneficial. As a dental team, we are not fans of extracting teeth either and would much prefer to perform a treatment method that keeps the tooth in place. Unfortunately, however, there are times when we have to recommend extraction, and here are a few examples:
Partially Avulsed Tooth – If an injury causes one or more teeth to become separated from the surrounding soft tissue and underlying bone, re-implantation is attempted first. This procedure requires the patient be seen within an hour of the time of the incident, and if that is not possible, then extraction may be needed.
Impacted Tooth – Wisdom teeth tend to be problematic. They can grow in at an angle, under other teeth, or partially emergence through the gums. These teeth cause problems for adjacent teeth and even damage the soft-tissue or your mouth. Under these circumstances, it is better to have the tooth extracted.
Severely Decayed Tooth – When root canal therapy cannot repair a large cavity, or previous treatment has failed, tooth extraction becomes the only way to get rid of the dangerous bacteria completely.
Advanced Periodontitis – When gum disease progresses to the point of destroying the supportive hard and soft tissues of teeth you could risk losing teeth. Sometimes bone and gum grafting may help if the disease has not progressed past a certain point.
Except in the case of wisdom teeth, after one or more teeth are extracted, your dentist will probably recommend a dental implant to replace both the root and visible portion of the tooth. When several teeth have been removed, implant-supported bridges and dentures are two excellent replacement options.
